Island site seeing

(Sunday 24 May 2009) by Dopps Family
Penang Island, Malaysia (May 24th)
First a couple of updates: Cianna no longer has a fever and is doing much better. I still have my cold and Anisa has a cough but we’ll stay out of the hospital. Carola and Cianna got stuck in the elevator for 5 or 10 minutes, they had to manually open the doors and jump down a couple feet to get out. Aside from that we are doing good and back on track which means we were able to get out of Batu Ferringhi and do some exploring and site seeing on the island crammed into the couple days we have left. To simplify the transportation and visit several sites we hired a taxi at RM20 per hour to take us where ever we wanted. We started with the 2 Burmese Buddhist temples just outside Georgetown and then drove to the more popular Thai Buddhist Temple (the largest in Malaysia). After 5 and ½ hours of walking stairs, taking shoes on and off, and drinking a gallon of water while sweating in 100 degree sticky-muggy heat, the girls (and I) were ready to head back to the hotel and the pool. Carola took lots of pictures of a plethora of Buddha and temple architecture, was blessed by a monk and sat with others during their chanting for the twice daily offering of food for the monks. Carola felt the energy and harmony of the spiritual surroundings while I tried to keep hydrated and look for the nearest food stand. The girls where somewhere in between…
Tomorrow, weather willing, we plan to do a walking tour of Georgetown. So far we haven’t been rained on although we’ve seen a couple of large thunderstorms get close. Today has been the hottest so far so I’m expecting rain soon (but that may be a good thing and cool things off).
